As I finished eighth grade, I was sad about leaving my school and nervous about starting a new school. I had so many questions: what will it feel like to be a freshman? Will people pick on me? Will I be popular? I knew there were going to be a lot of new opportunities for me that I didn’t have in eighth grade, so I was excited about that. I wanted to be involved and get good grades. I thought about all the different organizations I could join.
I was excited about making new friends and sad to leave old ones. I was excited about learning new subjects, especially a new foreign language. I was nervous about the difficulty of the classes, but I knew I would do well because I was eager to learn new things.
Now that I have been a freshman for four months, I am proud of what I have achieved. I have amazed myself. I love high school. I know these four years will help me prepare for the college of my choice.
Coming from a co-ed elementary school, I never knew I would end up at an all girls Catholic school, like St. Scholastica Academy. SSA is a big change for me, but I think this school is great. Everybody here is very nice and I have made many Benedictine new friends. The teachers here are helpful in every part of the day. The Sisters act as our mentors and have been extremely helpful to me as well. SSA is my second home. We spend most of my day here.
SSA has a lot of activities that we can be a part of. We have different choices in sports like: volleyball, basketball and track and field. The best part of SSA is that if you are not good at a sport, but you really want to be a part of the team, you are able to, be a part of the team and teach you the sport you like. Some freshmen spend the majority of their time in sports. I must tell you, that we have a lot of talented athletes in our school.
In addition to sports we have plenty of clubs that are available for students to join. For example: cooking club, art club, Spanish club, French club and many more. These types of clubs give you the opportunity to become a part of the specific activity of your choice. One of the most important organizations to be a part of is Student Council. Here you can voice your opinion and help become part of a change that benefits you.
There are also opportunities to have a good time and still be involved in the schools activities. One organization in particular, Big/Little Sister, gives the freshmen the opportunity to team up with a student from the Senior class to help and guide them through the trials of a typical day at school. The Seniors are role models for us.
Another fun thing to do at the school is take part in field trips like the one to the planetarium. These types of trips allow all grades to do something together. This is a good way to meet students from other levels.
Community day is a big part of SSA. Here we get to work both in and outdoors together. Indoors, we work with arts and crafts, talk to new people in our grade level and talk to our teachers about extracuiccular activities. Outdoors, we do fun things like have picnics and we play sports and sing our class songs.
During Halloween, we take part in an event called “Boo Fest.” This is an event which let’s children come over to SSA and play games, do arts and crafts, and get treats. This was a fun experience for when I went this year.
Even though there are ups and downs to High School, this is a necessary experience which prepares you for college and life. This experience teaches you how to get along, work with others, manage your time better and make good decisions. Overall, high school has put us on the path to becoming more well-rounded individuals.
